Now Serving Bhubaneswar

Wednesday, December 13th, 2006

We are now offering online DVD rental services in Bhubaneswar, Orissa. It is sort of a beta-launch to test the market out in tier 2 cities in India. So let your friends and folks there know about it.

(There is just one catch. We will not be able to offer next-day delivery in Bhubaneswar. It will take us two days to deliver. The Preferred Delivery Date options will be changed accordingly.)

Would there be people in small cities who would want to use a service like this? How many people will have internet connections/DVD players/credit cards/online banking account? Would they not just walk across the street and rent a DVD or VCD from the neighborhood shop (who also happens to be a travel agent, a STD booth, a lottery ticket agent, and a pre-paid mobile card seller) who has been there for years?

We can debate this endlessly. Or we can just start offering the service and find out. So that’s what we are gonna do.

But is Bhubaneswar the right tier 2 city to start? Will it be truly representative of other tier 2 cities like Cochin, Jaipur, and Pune? We can debate that endlessly as well!

And yes, we still have a couple of big cities to cover, specially the biggest one. We will get there soon as well.

We do realize that not having Telugu and Tamil titles in our collection will leave a lot of movie fans there unhappy. We will add those too shortly. In the meanwhile, how about starting with some good stuff from Bollywood or Hollywood?

Gandhi

Gandhi

October 2nd is around the corner. I picked up some interesting trivia about Gandhi, the movie. Ben Kingsley is an Anglo-Indian and his real name was Krishna Banji. His father is from India. In fact, his father was born in the same small sea-coast town as Mahatma Gandhi!
